Today was our first day of PUMPKIN WEEK! We have been waiting so long for this awesome week! Today we put together our pumpkin books and "met" our table pumpkins. Then each student drew a picture of their pumpkin in their book. We are lucky to have pumpkins of all shapes and sizes! Our last pumpkin activity for the day was measuring the height of our pumpkins. Here are some pictures of the table groups showing how many cubes it took to measure their pumpkins.

Hooray, we are published authors! Thank you for supporting us for our first Author's Cafe of the year. It was great to see many parents and guests from our school. The students all felt so proud of their hard work. Our next Author's Cafe will probably be in December. Be on the lookout for another invitation! Next time the invitation will come earlier so that parents have more time to plan. We'd love to have as many guests as possible. :]
Every day we participate in a 30 minute segment called "Champion's Review." During this time we review different math concepts, like tens and ones, tens frames, tally marks, weather, 120 charts, graphing, and more. This past week we have been encouraging the students to write complete sentences about the weather. Two of our students, JW and EK, wrote awesome sentences!
After several weeks, we have finally learned about all of the components of Daily 5! We started off with Read to Self and spent a few weeks working on building our stamina. We got so excited each time we gained more "reading muscle." Then, we introduced Read to Buddy, which is always a class favorite! After Read to Self and Read to Buddy, we learned about Listen to Reading. The class was happy to learn that in 1st grade, we do listening on the Kindles! Over the past couple of weeks we have learned about Work on Writing and Work on Words. There are so many fun ways we can become better readers through our Daily 5! Now we are slowly moving towards making our own rotation choices. Right now we are rotating with our reading group, but soon we will be able to pick our own rotations! Here are some photos of the kids in each of the different centers this past week. Click each photo to enlarge and read the caption.
I can't believe it is already summer break! I hope all of you are enjoying some free time to spend with family and relax. Here are some of the photos from our last bit of school. This first group of photos is from our class party. I also got pictures of some of the students sharing how they feel about the transition to second grade. They're going to be great! The students worked very hard to present short plays to the class. For over a week they practiced reading their lines with fluency and expression. They also got to spend some time making hats for their characters and a background for their play. Here are some photos I snapped during the presentations. And finally, the last day of school! We celebrated at the end of the day with one of our favorite activities: dancing! Have a great summer! I'll see you in the fall!
Many thanks to QR's mom for sending in these photos! For the second day of the CRCT Dr. Quinn encouraged us to "paint the school purple" in support of those testing. Many of the students in our class wore purple today, so we grabbed another picture of those participating. We are cheering on our friends in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades!
Today was the first day of the CRCT. We encouraged our older siblings and friends to do a SUPER job on the test by wearing super hero/character shirts. Here are some photos of the students in our class who participated.
This week we are learning about synonyms. The picture to the left is our synonyms anchor chart. You can practice synonyms at home by creating a matching game (like Memory) or simply asking students to come up with synonyms for a list of words. Synonyms are helpful when writing because the students learn to use different words. Encourage your child to use words more interesting |
